Nursery School
History
Preschoolers have been the most consistent users of both the old and new Ellis Hollow Community Centers. They have played and learned together there most weekday mornings from September to June for over 50 years.
The nursery school, a cooperative organized by Ellis Hollow parents, opened in the fall of 1953 with one teacher and 15 three- and four-year-olds in attendance. Tuition was $5 per child per month. School met on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. There were soon two teachers and the tuition gradually increased over the years.
In 1971, the nursery school expanded to five days and two sessions. Eighteen four-year-olds attended Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, and sixteen three-year-olds came on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Today, the nursery school nurtures 15 three- and four-year-olds on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Many of the children are Ellis Hollow residents.
